A voice mail at the Living Room indicates that the restaurant and its downstairs music lounge will be closed for the next two months as the Hillcrest venue undergoes repairs to correct problems from flooding late last year.
Cajun’s Wharf has begun happy hour on its outside deck, starting at 4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Its Thursday evening parties hosted by KABZ-FM, 103.7, midday radio talk show co-host Nathan Christian started last week. Admission is free.
Time ran out on Time Out Corner Cafe, on the first floor of the Heritage West building at Markham and Scott streets. The little sandwich, soup and pastry shop, a floor below the Arkansas Times, closed April 15 and did it with class, thanking people in the building for supporting them. The spot has been a cursed one for three restaurants now, but some of us at the Times held out hope that the latest attempt would survive.
WHOLE HOG CAFE The meat’s never been the question here, from day one, but you may recall that when we first reviewed Whole Hog we thought the sides fell a little short. That was then, this is now. For the past couple of years, Whole Hog has serve up a smoky, mayonnaisey potato salad that we simply love. No more of that yellow ’tater salad; this white variety has a nice seasoning to boot. The slaw could be the same, one of the girls behind the cash register wasn’t sure, but we think it’s better than when WHC first came on the scene, with more of a peppery flavor. We still add a little more pepper, but that’s just us. And did we notice a little pork in our beans on our last visit? With the Whole Hog platter ($9.95), the best deal on ’cue we’ve found in this area, there’s certainly enough shredded pork to add to the flavorful beans if that’s your want. Meaty ribs and an ample serving of sliced brisket, a fresh roll, plus those three sides round out a great meal. We may have mentioned it before, but those six different sauces at Whole Hog (from KC style to Memphis spicy to the mustard-vinegar-sugar variety found in the Carolinas) are available for purchase, too. The focus by the owners may be on branching out with franchises, but it hasn’t hurt the quality at the original one bit. And even with two expansions into substantial more space in the Riverdale Shopping Center, we’ve still encountered lines out the door at lunch.
