What's cooking

A new cafe in downtown North Little Rock will offer breakfast, wraps, paninis, hot dogs and a daily special. Located in the space previously occupied by Argenta Coffee Co. (318 Main), Fat Boys Cafe will open on Monday, May 17. A sign initially billed the restaurant as Dawgtown Grill, but owner Brian Converse, who also owns Kharma Consulting, a technology and media solutions company, said that Fat Boys was a “better fit” for the neighborhood. We’ll leave the puns to you, dear readers. The cafe will be open from 7 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday and for special events.

Capsule review

NEW: JAVA ROASTING ON THE SQUARE This nearly new coffee shop is THE place to be in downtown Bentonville. People from all walks — longtime residents, 20- and 30-something Wal-Mart vendors tapping away their laptops, old and young — can be found here at any time of the day, sipping its good strong coffees. The brick walls are lined with art, the food case is laden with pastries and cookies and there’s Coca-Cola in the bottle. If you couldn’t see the original Walton Five and Dime out the window you might think you were in the big city. (Opened by a couple relocated to Bentonville from Little Rock, Java manages to feel homey and sophisticated at the same time.) The pastries are as pleasing as the ambiance: Muffins, which have become ubiquitous at these sons of Starbucks, are such standouts they’ll make you remember why you liked them when they weren’t everywhere you looked, a balance between too light and too heavy and, in the one we chose, full of juicy blueberries. But Java’s not just a breakfast place: It’s open until 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and until 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, with a menu of soups and sandwiches and quiches, etc. We had a ham and Swiss sandwich made with real ham on real bread that, while over-toasted maybe, was top-notch. 102 E.
