WHAT'S COOKING

The retail center Shackleford Crossing has a number of new restaurants set to soon begin construction. National chains Copeland's Famous New Orleans Restaurant and Bar, Texas Roadhouse and Zaxby's and local concepts Samurai Steakhouse and Panda Chinese Buffet have all signed leases with Clary Development, according to the retail management group's president, Sean Glancy. That leaves room for at least four more restaurants at the retail center, Glancy said.

There's a new Mexico Chiquito. Open since early last week, the new locale on 13924 Cantrell includes a dining room and a drive-thru window. The restaurant's hours are 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 11 a.m. to midnight on Friday and Saturday. The phone number is 217-0700.

UPDATE

SO RESTAURANT-BAR For whatever reason, we've been on a real cheeseburger tear lately, and even at such a sophisticated place as So Restaurant-Bar, we couldn't be tempted away by any of the more creative menu offerings. So's version is two mini-cheeseburgers, pretty little things stacked high and served with a fancy container of shoestring fries. We liked the fries, but the cheeseburgers left us wishing we'd put our $9 toward something else. They weren't bad, but better ones are easy to find for half the price, and So's menu has many other choices where that's not the case. We'll go for one of them next time. 3610 Kavanaugh Blvd. Full bar. CC $$-$$$ 663-1464 LD daily.
