Capsule review

UPDATE: MARKET CAFE The way East McCain keeps adding new eats, someday Market Cafe (located at the far end of east McCain in the Farmer’s Market) will be the anchor restaurant. You may not know this gem of a place that’s been here for more than 40 years. After selling it in the 1970s, the Andrews family bought it back a year ago and continues the low-key, kind of old-highway diner-stop feel with the anchored round stools at the counter top, booths and tables. Well, not “feel,” really. It’s just the way it is. We went by one mid-morning with hopes they were still serving breakfast. Come to find out they serve breakfast all the hours. Our order of a huge Western omelet, hash browns and a biscuit ($5.75) and gravy (50 cents) washed down with a flavorful cup(s) of coffee (95 cents) was a hit. The omelet’s ham, onions, and green peppers were grilled then tossed in with tomato and melted cheese. Perfect! Salsa to top it off was offered, but we passed. Our biscuit was good, and even better when we spooned out the hot, thick gravy over it. We lingered awhile and the lunch crowd started coming in. Overhearing what pies were going up on the lunch board, we couldn’t resist a slice of homemade pie ($1.95). A slice of pecan with a sweet, real vanilla filling and coconut with the high stacked meringue finally filled us up. We talked with our waitress, Carolyn, and found out that she makes the pies there fresh daily. Upon leaving, just the sound of other customers ordering up their plate lunch made us want to return soon. “Turnip greens, limas, mashed taters, chicken fry, cornbread”...help me! 45 Market Plaza, 945-8884, BL Mon.-Sat. $ CC.
