The Central Arkansas Library System has opened Bookends Cafe on the first floor of the Cox Creative Center at 120 Commerce, the curving historic building across the parking lot from the Main Library. The cafe offers coffees, pastries and cookies from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and sandwiches, quiche, soups and salads from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Milkshakes and smoothies are also on the menu. Tables are set amid gently used books and gift items for sale. Call 918-3093 for more information.

Klappenbach Bakery, the venerable pastry and bread establishment in Fordyce that had to close after a fire in May, will reopen Sept. 22, Paul Klappenbach says. Except for new wall colors, everything will be the same at the bakery, where a big menu includes cinnamon, rye, pumpernickel, wheat, French and other breads, Danishes, donuts, brownies, pound cakes, and sandwiches, including Reuben, cheese steak and chicken salad. Klappenbach was opened 32 years ago by Norman and Lee Klappenbach. The bakery is open for lunch Tuesday through Saturday at 108 W. Fourth St. Call 870-352-7771 for more information.
