What's cooking, May 10

Fresh Market, the North Carolina-based specialty grocery store, will open its first store in Arkansas on Wednesday, May 16, at 11525 Cantrell in the Pleasant Ridge Town Center. The market will host a variety of grand opening festivities throughout its first few days, including a live jazz band, complimentary baby-back ribs and a free sample bag of coffee to the first 1,000 customers.

The Old World-styled store will focus on the “finest” fruits and vegetables, “unique” candies, imported cheeses, “top-quality” deli items and “premium” meats and seafood, according to a news release.

Fresh Market operates 70 stores throughout the Southeast and Midwest. The company says the Little Rock operation will bring 90 jobs to the area.

The Rand McNally map company has named McClard’s Bar-B-Q a “can’t miss stop” in its new Southeast Getaway Guide.

Three generations of the McClard family make everything at the restaurant from scratch. Shortly after midnight, Joe McClard rises to get wood burning for barbecuing the day’s supply of pork, beef and chicken. The restaurant also features homemade cole slaw, beans and damn fine hot tamales.

The Rand McNally guide includes a map with directions to get to McClard’s along with information about the restaurant and other Hot Springs-area attractions.
