Whats Cooking, June 14

Cregeen’s Irish Pub will open in August on the corner of Main and Broadway in downtown North Little Rock. The pub, named for the Gaelic word for “little rock,” is currently being constructed in Dublin, Ireland. The menu, available online at www.creegenspubs.com, promises Guinness steamed mussels, shepherds pie, bangers and mash and Irish breakfast all day.

Ristorante Capeo owners the Isaac brothers, Brian and chef Eric, have started construction on Argenta Seafood Company, their new venture in downtown North Little Rock. The 5,200-square-foot restaurant will be located at 521 Main St., where the Teak Furniture store used to be. The restaurant’s website, www.arseafood.com, promises a fall opening.

KITCHEN EXPRESS: You know how they say that when a church burns down, the building is not the church, the church is the people? Same could be said for the Kitchen Express when it burned down. The restaurant is not the building; it’s the cooks inside. We don’t know if the same cooks worked there before the fire, but we do know for sure that their new modern brick restaurant still cranks out some of the most memorable home cooked food ever. And the prices are very reasonable. It’s always difficult to choose what to order. There are several meat choices and about 20 or more sides served cafeteria-style. It would be a draw as to who got the best lunch on our recent visit. We tried a two-piece fried golden-perfect catfish plate with black-eyed peas, green beans and cornbread for $6.59. And a very well seasoned two-piece fried chicken plate with mac and cheese (no box stuff here, and with a little jalapeno flavor kick), turnip greens simmered with pork and roll for $5.19. We barely had room left for the large serving of homemade peach cobbler at just $2.09. Other sandwiches and burgers can be had, but the aroma that hits you at the door makes you not want to wait for those to be made. And they serve breakfast, too. We can only imagine how good that would taste. 4800 Asher Ave., 666-3500, No alcohol, CC, LD Mon.-Sat., L Sun., $-$$.
