Big Whiskey's American Bar and Grill, a Springfield, Mo.-based restaurant, will open its second location at the corner of Markham and Cumberland in the space that previously housed Velo Rouge. As its name suggests, Big Whiskey's is a full bar with a pub-style menu — burgers, a wide variety of sandwiches, steaks. We're told it could be open as soon as mid-November.

Gourmands with deep pockets, take note. On Saturday, Oct.18, at the Capital Hotel food writer John T. Edge, who also serves as the director of the Southern Foodways Alliance, teams with Chef Lee Richardson to offer “The Best of New Orleans Cuisine.” Presented by and benefiting the Oxford American magazine, in conjunction with its recent New Orleans issue, the event includes cocktails and “degustation” from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. ($125), followed by a four-course meal and an absinthe tasting at 8 p.m. ($500). Tickets are available at oxfordamericanmag.com.
