THE LONG WAY ROUND
7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2
Bravo (Comcast Ch. 50)
While it’s a common dream to just take off on a trip around the world, most of us will never experience it. Then again, most of us didn’t play Obi Wan Kenobi in the last three “Star Wars” prequels. Here, movie star Ewan McGregor and friend Charlie Boorman set off on motorcycles for a four-month, 20,000-mile journey across Europe and Asia, finally ending up in the United States via the Bering Strait. It wasn’t all four-star hotels, either. Traveling mostly on inhospitable backroads, the pair braved floods, injuries, breakdowns and bandits on this once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Here, the sixth and final episode finds our travelers bruised and weary, but triumphant in the end.
10 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8
History Channel (Comcast Ch. 70)
Being a fallen-away gearhead (I’ve been stuck in Responsible Parent mode for several years now, which kind of precludes roaring exhausts and squawling tires), I must admit that I’m hooked on the current slew of combustion-driven reality shows on channels like Discovery and TLC. This is the newest, from the History Channel. Here, two teams get identical classic muscle cars and a single day to prepare them. The next day, they go drag racing, and whichever team comes out ahead in two out of three races wins both cars. This week, players compete for the ultimate prize for “Smokey and the Bandit” fans: a matched set of 1975 Pontiac Firebirds.
IDENTITY THEFT: PROTECTING YOURSELF IN THE INFORMATION AGE
11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 4
AETN (Comcast Ch. 3)
If you fail to reduce your financial paperwork to a powder before throwing it away these days, you might just wind up buying a plasma TV for someone you don’t know in Detroit. Last year, 9.9 million American consumers fell victim to identity theft, making it the fastest growing crime in the U.S. For many, such crimes lead to a nightmare of spoiled credit and calls from collection agencies, and countless hours spent trying to clear their record. Still, there are ways to protect yourself besides burning all your credit cards in the barbecue grill. Here, identity theft expert Mari Frank walks viewers through the skills they need to protect their most precious possession: their good name.
