IT WAS A GOOD WEEK FOR …
BILL HALTER. An unknown political wannabe who happens to be a Rhodes Scholar, former Social Security administrator and Stanford University trustee announced that he has $500,000 for a Democratic primary race against Mike Beebe. No way it can hurt to have a campaign about ideas, which North Little Rock native Halter has. Electability? We’ll see.
The HOGS. The football team beat Louisiana-Monroe. Hey. Don’t snicker. ASU couldn’t do it.
IT WAS A BAD WEEK FOR …
GOV. MIKE HUCKABEE. He blasted the Supreme Court special masters, Democrats and anyone else critical of him through a press secretary. He’s too busy campaigning for president in the taxpayers’ King Air to be bothered with actually running Arkansas in person.
ATTORNEY GENERAL MIKE BEEBE. His counsel and representation didn’t do the legislature much good in the school finance case and that message continues to resonate in media across the state.
ASA HUTCHINSON. He was quick to make a campaign issue of Mike Beebe’s showing in the school case. Not that he had any specific ideas of his own, mind you.
LITTLE ROCK GOVERNMENT REFORM. After one public hearing at which citizens said they should have a voice in the powers of the mayor, the discussion of a change in government was abruptly suspended. This was partially a product of too much focus on paying the mayor more and not enough on actual duties. Let’s reopen discussions soon and include ward-only council elections on the agenda.
JOHN DALY. With chain-smoking, beer-drinking, portly guys everywhere cheering him on, the Arkansas native golfer lost the American Express Championship in sudden death to Tiger Woods when Big John choked on a three-foot putt. He gave his untrustworthy putter to a fan.
