It was a good week for ...

The HOGS. The division champs in the SEC, with a win over Mississippi State, move to a climactic Little Rock showdown this week with the LSU Tigers.

DELAY. Several school districts asked the state Supreme Court to retain supervision of the Lake View school funding case until the 2007 legislature meets. Given past performance by the legislature, that sounds like a good idea.

GOV. MIKE HUCKABEE. He made a recommendation unusual for a soon-to-be Republican national candidate, even if he is a lame duck governor. He recommended retention of a beer tax many legislators thought temporary to guarantee continued funding for preschool programs.

The LITTLE ROCK SCHOOL DISTRICT. It finally found land, outside the district, to build a sorely needed elementary school for western Little Rock.

The LITTLE ROCK CONVENTION AND VISITORS BUREAU. A variety of people dodged rules to buy a Chevy Malibu for retiring director Barry Travis. It’s the kind of thing that gives rise to other questions about how this largely independent agency handles a significant pot of money.

The state CORRECTION DEPARTMENT. The Democrat-Gazette revealed that 42 laptop computers worth $59,000 are missing from a department storage closet. Question: If they needed the computers so badly, why were they in storage?


He complained about how legal rules on fund-raising favored U.S. Sen. John McCain in a race for president even as he planned to raise unlimited amounts at a December fund-raiser for what will be a presidential exploratory campaign in everything but name. Seven weeks to go.
