SPINNING. Though he’s raised less money than all but one of the still-active Republican presidential candidates, Mike Huckabee insisted he had “momentum.”
It was a bad week for …
THE LITTLE ROCK SCHOOL DISTRICT. The board voted to go to mediation with lawyer John Walker on a case he lost and the district won and which it seems certain to win on appeal. Even Walker conceded as much. The goal is for Walker to have a privileged position to monitor the school district’s effort on behalf of black students and possibly get some more legal fees. The interests of black children are vitally important. But the board can do the job without a contract with John Walker.
The ARKANSAS DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE. It persists in calling the Little Rock School Board working majority a “gang,” a term it never used when a white majority controlled the board and used the power for the likes of the secret and illegally handled deal for a pet project funded by the daily newspaper’s publisher. It further intimates that only white board members care about school children, while black board members care only about cronyism. It’s precisely that patronizing and insulting outlook on the part of the white power structure that produced the new board majority.
LAKE MAUMELLE. Central Arkansas Water has decided to let a developer build a subdivision above the lake and give him $1 million besides to build a ditch that might — might — prevent runoff into the water supply. The utility’s board also gave up requiring first that the developer submit additional acreage to the watershed management plan, meaning the utility will likely be held up again.
MIKE HUCKABEE. He answered a Michael Moore movie he hadn’t seen — “Sicko” — by saying the problem with America’s health care is that Moore and people like him are fat. He insulted fat people, yes. But more important are the tens of millions who have no health insurance coverage, overweight or not. THAT is the problem with American healthcare.
