Arkansas has no famous waterfalls — no Niagara, no Victoria — but it does have waterfalls, and any waterfall is better than no waterfall, is the way we look at it. A waterfall has the capacity to excite and soothe at the same time. Not many things do.

The wilderness photographer Tim Ernst has compiled a list of the tallest waterfalls (on public property) in Arkansas. The top 10:

• 209 feet, Hemmed-In Hollow Falls, Ponca Wilderness Area, Buffalo National River

• 148 feet, Diamond Falls, Ponca Wilderness Area, Buffalo National River

• 114 feet, Kings Bluff Falls, Pedestal Rocks Scenic Area, Ozark National Forest

• 113 feet, Hedges Pouroff, Upper Buffalo Wilderness Area, Buffalo National River

• 95 feet, Cedar Falls, Petit Jean State Park

• 88 feet, Box Canyon Falls, Leatherwood Wilderness Area, Ozark National Forest

• 87 feet, Cathedral Falls, Leatherwood Wilderness Area, Ozark National Forest

• 83 feet, Fishtrap Hollow Falls, Ponca Wilderness Area, Buffalo National River

• 81 feet, Sweden Creek Falls, Sweden Creek Natural Area, Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission

• 78 feet, Keefe Falls, Buffalo Ranger District, Ozark National Forest

A longer list can be found on Ernst’s web site (www.Cloudland.net) and in his book, Arkansas Waterfalls Guidebook.
