THE SMOKING GUN PRESENTS: WORLD'S DUMBEST CRIMINALS

8 p.m. Thursday, July 3

Tru TV

When in the mood to surf the Internet, one of our go-to stops has long been thesmokinggun.com. A veritable treasure trove of movie-star dirt, weird lawsuits, celebrity mugshots and odd tales of crime, the Smoking Gun is always a good time when you've got some time to burn. The good news for fans is, back when “Court TV” became “Tru TV” a couple months back, the Smoking Gun was there. The spinoff series — with installments on dumb criminals, bad drivers, would-be-daredevils and the like — has so far been a real treat, featuring commentary from C-List celebrities who have seen their own brushes with the law. Among them:  “Partridge Family” kid Danny Bonaduce; '70s heartthrob Leif Garrett; head-trauma victim Gary Busey and former figure skater Tonya Harding. Chock full of video of people doing stupid things, it's a good way to let yourself know why it's always better to stick to the straight and narrow.

ROBOT CHICKEN

10 p.m. Friday, July 4

Cartoon Network

nf you're an adult male of a certain vintage, the word “action figure” will undoubtedly get your wayback machine humming, synapses full of summer afternoons spent in the company of Optimus Prime, Cobra Commander, Luke Skywalker and He-Man. And now that you're grown, you can admit it: Back then, your action figures (possibly in the company of the neighbor girl's Barbies) got up to shenanigans that would have had you hauled to a shrink faster than you can say “Ritalin” had your parents ever caught you at it. Which is, come to think of it, what makes “Robot Chicken” so funny. Decidedly NOT for kids, the show features stop-motion animated action figures from the 1980s starring in a variety of skits. Beyond that, you'll just have to see for yourself. At turns hilarious, juvenile, stupid and laugh-out-loud funny, it's definitely worth a look, especially for Gen-Xers.
