Tailgating time

The Arkansas Times is happy to report that the fans for Arkansas Razorback football games in Fayetteville are gradually catching on to the tailgating tradition, but nobody does it quite like the crowd that pores in early to the War Memorial Stadium golf course hours before a Saturday kickoff. You’ll notice hundreds of cars and SUVs by early morning on Saturday, Sept. 18, as the Razorbacks play their first of two games in Little Rock season, against Louisiana-Monroe. Both this game and the season finale on Nov. 27 with LSU are sold out. Saturday’s kickoff is at 6 p.m., stadium gates open at 4 p.m. So, though the competition takes a significant drop from last week (No. 6 ranked Texas, a 22-20 winner of the Hogs), that won’t slow the golf course revelry. Here are some tailgating tips: • Plan an early arrival, the earlier the better. The course opens for parking at 7:30 a.m. Parking is $10 per vehicle and it’s first-come, first-serve. If you have UA scholarship parking on or near the course, it’s still advised to arrive at the stadium earlier than an hour before kickoff. • Purchase a canopy, such as an E-Z Up brand that is available at Sam’s. Your tailgating guests will thank you if it’s as sunny and warm as it’s been for the first two games of the season. • If you don’t have your own tailgating plans, the UA will set up a “Hog Trough” with food and soft drinks for sale and other activities near the Walker Tennis Center, and local radio stations also will sponsor large tailgate parties on the course near Fair Park and Markham Street. • Help keep your tailgating area clean. This is a golf course, after all. For more information, call 663-6385.
