Sarah Hughes, the 2002 Olympic gold medal winner in figure skating, highlights the lineup for the Smucker’s Stars on Ice tour at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 24, at Alltel Arena.
Producer and Olympic champion Scott Hamilton has assembled many of the biggest names in professional skating for this 19th tour, including Hughes, who is making her first trip to Alltel Arena. Stars on Ice features Olympic style performance, ice dance and comedy and drama set to contemporary music.
“Sarah captured not only our hearts, but the hearts of everyone around the world, when she won the gold at Salt Lake City in 2002,” Hamilton said in a press release. Hughes surprised everyone by jumping from fourth place into first and winning the gold medal with a demanding and near-perfect free-style, long-program routine.
Hughes, 19, will be joined by fellow 2002 Olympic champions Jamie Sale and David Pelletier, Elena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze, and four-time world champion Alexei Yagudin; former world champion Todd Eldredge; world champion Yuka Sato; eight-time British champion Steven Cousins, and Olympic medalists Kyoko Ina and John Zimmerman. Yagudin is the only man to win the triple crown of figure skating, taking the European, Grand Prix and World titles in the same season, as well as winning the Olympics the same year (2002) with a near-perfect score in artistry.
Emmy Award-winner and former Olympic champion Christopher Dean directs and choreographs the show.
Tickets for the show range from $39.50 to $75.50 and are available through Ticketmaster outlets or the arena box office, 975-9000.
