St. Joseph’s names Liuzza new Director of Human Resources
HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – St. Joseph’s Mercy Health Center recently named Jed Liuzza, SPHR, as its new Executive Director of Human Resources.
Liuzza comes to St. Joseph’s with 20 years of experience in human resources – the last 10 with healthcare institutions. Most recently, he held the position of Director of Benefits and Team Member Health at East Jefferson General Hospital, a 450-bed facility in the New Orleans suburb of Metairie, Louisiana.
“We were fortunate to find someone with Jed’s breadth of experience in human resources,” said Patrick McCruden, St. Joseph’s Vice President of Mission and Ethics. “In the healthcare arena, he has worked with physicians, hospitals and corporate human resources, with special knowledge in the area of benefits. Jed’s experience outside of health care – in the retail and restaurant industries – gives him many fresh ideas that I believe are a result of a broad human resources background.
“Jed also understands that hiring, training and maintaining the right staff of co-workers is key to the success of any organization.”
Liuzza, born and raised in the New Orleans area, indicated that he, his wife, Stephanie, and their two sons, 16-year-old Brandon and 14-year-old Stephen, had talked about relocating over the last few years. Thanks to Hurricane Katrina and the devastation it left in its path; that talk quickly turned to action last fall.
“We had always had the desire to spread our wings and move out of the area, and then Katrina hit and really put everything into perspective for us,” said Liuzza, who was able to move his family back into its Metairie, Louisiana residence at about the same time (mid July) he learned he had been selected for the St. Joseph’s position. “We wanted a better quality of life than what is being offered in the New Orleans area, and with many family members dispersing to other areas of the country, it was not a place for us to remain.
“Not only is Hot Springs a smaller community, but one that I think is more family oriented and offers better values than where we came from. Plus, we are really looking forward to the change of seasons you experience in this area.”
Although moving out of the New Orleans area was obviously a big motivation for relocating his family, Liuzza insists the decision to do so was more about a fit with St. Joseph’s and its faith-based mission.
“I immediately felt like I was home,” said Liuzza, who earned his bachelor’s degree in management – with a concentration in human resources – from the University of New Orleans. “We have an environment here where the number one concern is service to others, whether it is patients and their families or other co-workers. Co-workers obviously take pride in what they do and enjoy being here, because I have never been at a hospital where the tenure of the majority of co-workers is as high as it is.
“I feel honored and privileged to work at a facility where co-workers work so well together. You don’t have to be here long to realize it is a complete team effort and that the co-workers genuinely care for one another.”
