- YUNUS: At Artspree.
A rising star in the opera world, soprano Monica Yunus’ 2006-07 schedule includes singing the role of Papagena in “Die Zauberflote” at the Metropolitan Opera — and giving a solo concert at 7:30 p.m. tonight, Nov. 16, at the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall at UALR. The concert is part of the Artspree series and is presented in partnership with the Marilyn Horne Foundation.
“I love doing recitals because I have the say in what exactly I’ll sing, and I can tailor the program,” Yunus said. “… This is a program of my favorites.”
Yunus, 29, is the daughter of Muhammad Yunus, who won the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize for economic development work in Bangladesh. She made her Metropolitan Opera debut as Barberina in “Le Nozze di Figaro” in 2003.
Thursday’s program will include “Alleluia” from Mozart’s “Exsultate Jubilate,” and songs by Vincenzo Bellini, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Enrique Granados and Kurt Weill. Tickets are free for UALR students, $10 for other students and $17-$20 for the general public. Call 569-3288 for more information.
