“One Sticky Showcase” is the catch-phrase being applied to the first Arkansas Times Musicians Showcase to be held at Sticky Fingerz Rock ‘n’ Roll Chicken Shack in the River Market district beginning tonight (Thursday, Jan. 26). Sticky Fingerz and KKPT-FM, 94.1 “The Point” are the presenting sponsors.
The first four of 20 semifinalists will perform beginning at 8:30 p.m. Following semifinals will be held on Thursday nights, Feb. 2, 9 and 16, with a winner from each Showcase advancing to the Showcase finals on Friday, March 3.
The diverse music ranges from modern rock to bluegrass to alternative and Americana. The first week’s offerings are rock (Anxiety, a young band from Conway), hip-hop (Trapper the Rapper, from Texarkana), modern rock (Thanks for Nothing, from Fayetteville) and country (Riverbilly, formerly known as Sum of Us, from Little Rock).
A panel of judges will determine a winner for each semifinal, basing half of a band’s score on its song originality and song quality, and another half spread evenly among musicianship, showmanship and crowd response.
The eventual Showcase winner will receive a gift certificate for equipment from Jacksonville Guitar, food from Trio’s Restaurant, recording time from Blue Chair Studio, a guaranteed spot on the Riverfest lineup, a photo shoot with Times photographer Brian Chilson and more.
Previous winners since the Arkansas Times began sponsoring the showcase are: The Odds (2005), Grandpa’s Goodtime Fandango (2004), Salty Dogs (2003), Runaway Planet (2002), Mojo Depot (2001), Big Silver (2000) and Brenda and Ellis (1999).
Admission is $5. The show is for ages 18 and up.
