Among its benefits, Act 100 of 1909 produced some of the best team names in all of college football. “Wonder Boys” (Arkansas Tech), “Muleriders” (Southern Arkansas) and “Boll Weevils” (University of Arkansas at Monticello) resonate. (The other Act 100 school, Arkansas State, didn't distinguish itself in this area. “Gorillas” had promise, but then they became the prosaic “Indians” and now they're the slightly less prosaic “Red Wolves.”)
Small-college football isn't what it used to be, but the Wonder Boys, Muleriders and Boll Weevils are still conference rivals and play each other every year. As part of the Act 100 centennial celebration, SAU and UAM will try to regain some of the comparative glory of the past by playing the last game of the 2009 season on Nov. 7 at El Dorado, in what they're calling the Boom Town Classic. The two South Arkansas schools played some games at the El Dorado neutral site back in the 1930s.
