Salary comparisons at UALR

Here are the average salaries for faculty at UALR for the 2006-2007 academic year, from the UALR Office of Institutional Research:

Full professor

Men $79,902 Women $76,608

Associate professor

Men $67,533 Women $65,285

Assistant professor

Men $60,101 Women $52,945

Instructor

Men $37,845 Women $37,920

Jim Lynch of the Office of Institutional Research says that law, business and the high-tech “cyber college” have fiercer competition for new faculty than do the arts and sciences. “For example, during the last academic year, the minimum salary paid a new assistant professor in business (9-month contract) was $85,000. The same was true for the school of law. In the Cyber College, new assistant professors were minimally hired in the mid-$60,000s.”

And in these high-paying areas, men outnumber women. “Among the 63 male faculty who are assistant professors, 23 are in the business, law or cyber colleges,” Lynch said. “In other words, 37 percent of male assistant professors are teaching in the most competitive-salaried academic disciplines. Among the 55 female faculty who are assistant professors, only 7 are in the business, law or cyber colleges. This means that only 13 percent of female assistant professors are teaching in the most competitive-salaried academic disciplines. Thus, the average assistant professor salary for women would necessarily be lower.”
