My favorite Arkansas

Like any lady worth having, Arkansas has her blemishes and scars. Still, and despite a lot of things not going her way in the recent past — clear-cutting, Wal-Martification, paper mills and more than our share of robber barons snidely enough to fit right in on the Vaudeville circuit — the old girl is holding up quite nicely. After all these years, we’re still in love. While we have our own collection of memories and places that keep our heart-fires burning, what makes people love this state is, of course, different for everyone. That said, we thought we might dip into our bag of tricks and pull out a chestnut — one well-worn, but still a treat for both readers and ourselves when we can get away with it. That is: Get a random sampling of readers to tell us, in their own words, about their favorite place in Arkansas. While the results are as varied as people — from the old swimmin’ hole, to the I-430 bridge at sunset and the halls of Governor’s school — we think it makes for something like what the old-timers called a friendship quilt: blocks of color, each making a personal statement apart, but only really speaking when you put them together. Enjoy.
