DAZZLING: Diamond captivates the Juneteenth crowd.

Tough security, a long line resembling what can only be described as a human centipede, and even reports of an expected rainy day couldn’t keep devoted fans away from the Juneteenth 2007 concert. Fortunately, the weather turned out well, and a capacity crowd of more than 10,000 filled the Rivefest Amphitheatre (tickets sold out nearly two weeks in advance) got to enjoy a star-studded line-up.

Juneteenth commemorates June 19th 1865, when slaves in Texas received news of their freedom promised in the Emancipation Proclamation. The annual concert in Little Rock is sponsored by Power 92 with partners Alltel and KOKY 102.1 FM to raise money for Little Rock’s Watershed Project.

The performances were what most would expect from a concert involving the genres of R&B and hip-hop, veering from slow and melodic to loud and energetic.

This year’s musical guests included a wide array of national acts such as Marques Houston, T-Pain and Sammie. Some of the evening’s highlights came from artists like Da Heisman Boyz, who had the crowd swaying back and forth in the Heisman pose with their smash hit “Do Da Heisman.” Jibbs from “Chain Hang Low” fame worked the audience into a frenzy as he made his way from the stage to the front of the crowd. One of the most unforgettable performances came from Da Shop Boys, known for their hit “Party Like A Rock Star.” No one would’ve ever expected a crowd to be holding up the devil’s horns at a predominantly R&B and hip-hop concert as the group sang the hook from its hit song: “totally dude.”

Local artists like Jotorious, “Power 92’s only Irish DJ,” and Young Taz made their presence known amidst the national acts by getting the crowd involved and making sure to allude to their home state and cities, namely Little Rock and Pine Bluff.

Juneteenth doesn’t disappoint when it comes to delivering artists in demand. Hopefully, Power 92 will continue the trend and make next year’s a huge success as well.
