FAMILY: Married since Jan. 28, 2006, to wife Shanti; expecting the birth of his first child, a girl, in early November.
EDUCATION: Graduated valedictorian of Little Rock Catholic High in 1979; A.B. degree from Stanford University in 1983. Received a Rhodes Scholarship, and graduated from England’s Oxford University in 1986 with a Master of Philosophy degree in Economics.
RESUME: Management consultant at several corporations. Economist for the Joint Economic Commission of the U.S. Congress, and chief economist for the U.S. Senate Finance Committee. Worked in Bill Clinton’s first campaign for president in 1992. After Clinton was elected, went to work in the federal Office of Management and Budget. In 1999, nominated by Clinton and confirmed unanimously by the U.S. Senate as deputy commissioner of the Social Security Administration. Later served as acting commissioner of Social Security during the early days of the G.W. Bush administration. Currently serves on the board of directors of two corporations: Threshold Pharmaceuticals and Internet content manager Akamai Technologies, and serves as a trustee emeritus of Stanford University.
