Colonial goes megastore

One of Little Rock's distinguishing features, at least in my part of town, is the neighborhood liquor store — those little holes in the wall that are short on selection but always reliable for a quick pint of booze. They're especially beguiling if they have a drive-thru, or if they have a name like “Firewater,” or if, like Markham Street Liquor, they open at the convenient hour of 7 a.m.

Arkansas Times readers prefer a different sort of shopping experience, however: The one-stop wine, beer and liquor shop. An abundance of warehouse-style megastores, à la Sam's in Chicago, has yet to hit town, but with the new Colonial Wine and Spirits location at 11200 Markham, a taste of that experience is at hand.

The store, which took over the roomy space of a former car dealership, offers a broad selection of wine, beer and liquor over a wide price range. Wine is a particular focus here — the store holds tastings of three different wines daily. Deals are to be had on Wednesday Wine Day, when bottles are discounted 15 percent. Beer connoisseurs will appreciate the generous selection of hard-to-find craft brews.
