- LOFTY: At Sticky's.
This issue of the Times will include club acts through Jan. 12; here are some highlights through that date:
A double bill of Southern rock and roll is slated for Thursday. Dec. 29, at Sticky Fingerz.
The Loft, a Nashville-based sextet, opens the show at 9:30 p.m., followed by Baton Rouge’s Benjy Davis Project.
The all-original Benjy Davis Project was hardly known three years ago before selling out of copies of its debut CD, “More Than Local,” which showed off the song-based-style of the group and significantly expanded the fan base. A U.S. tour followed, and the group has since released two CDs, “The Practice Sessions” and the recent “The Angie House,” which includes a guest appearance by the late blues guitarist Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown.
Admission is $6.
Also at Sticky Fingerz, self- and social-analytical acoustic rocker Cory Branan will appear Thursday, Jan. 5. Branan writes of the road, and he has a new album, “12 Songs,” which follows his well-received “The Hell You Say.” Admission is $5 for the 9 p.m. show.
Motown via Southeast Arkansas rhythm and blues will be featured when band ‘N’ Demand plans at Cajun’s Wharf on Saturday, Jan. 7. The group has a large list of cover songs that highlight the heyday of Motown Records (e.g., the Temptations, the Supremes, Marvin Gaye). The group recently won the “Battle of the Bands” contest at Pine Bluff’s “Smoke on the Water” festival held last September. The show starts at 8 p.m., and the cover charge is $5.
Vino’s Brewpub will have a long lineup of indie-rock, punk, pop and (please, don’t cringe) “emo” bands on Wednesday, Jan. 11.
The headline act is June, which has completed its third album, “If You Speak Any Faster.” Also appearing will be the Audition, Forgive and Small Towns Burn a Little Slower. It all starts at 7 p.m. Admission for all ages is $8.
Some of us remember them fondly as Singleminded, but the guys of Frail Division have not only changed their name, they’ve altered their hair and have spiffed up their image a bit, complete with a new album, “This Is No Fairy Tale.” The album’s first single, “Sara,” has found a spot in local radio rotation.
Frail Division’s CD release party will start at 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 30, at Juanita’s Cantina Ballroom with Legion and Kingsdown also appearing. Admission is $8 for all ages.
