Bruce James Calls the Hogs, Nov. 2

Saturday’s game
No. 12 Arkansas (7-1 overall, 4-0 in SEC) vs. South Carolina (5-3 overall, 3-3 in SEC)
Site: Williams-Brice Stadium, Columbia, S.C.
Time: 6:45 p.m. CST
Radio/TV: The ARSN network will broadcast the game on radio affiliates. The game will be televised nationally on cable and satellite outlets by ESPN.

What James says: This is the toughest call on a game since I’ve been picking them in these pages. I can find as many reasons why Arkansas could win as I can that South Carolina will win.

About the Gamecocks: Arkansas’s defense is going to see something a little bit different. Everybody knows you have to stop Syvelle Newton, their senior quarterback. I expect them to spread the Arkansas defense wide and try to run Cory Boyd, their tailback, inside. He’s averaging 5 yards a carry. If he can consistently get 5 yards a carry between the tackles Saturday, Arkansas will have a difficult time. If Arkansas can stop Boyd and put all the pressure on Newton, then Arkansas will win the football game. But Spurrier is going to be approaching this as he HAS to win this game. They lost to Tennessee last week and go to Florida next week. There’s going to be an serious intensity level over there.

How do the Hogs match up offensively? Arkansas should be able to run the ball consistently against South Carolina. Look for them to sell out to stop it and try to force us to throw the football. Bottom line is, it’s probably going to come down to turnovers and the kicking game.

Saturday’s pick: Arkansas, 28-27, and it’s going to be a fun game to watch.
