Boxing champion Jermain Taylor to promote UAMS/UALR Stuttering Clinic

World middleweight boxing champion Jermain Taylor will visit the UAMS/ UALR Stuttering Clinic to encourage patients by speaking about his own fight against stuttering at 4 p.m. on Tuesday Dec. 5. The event will be held at the University Plaza next to UALR, 5820 Asher Avenute, Ste. 600.

The Arkansas Center for Stuttering Research and Treatment, a joint program of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR), provides a full range of clinical services to individuals with communication disorders, including evaluation and treatment, as well as training for speech therapists.

Stuttering is a communication disorder characterized with frequent disruptions in the forward flow of speech affecting 5 percent of preschool children.

Brent A. Gregg, Ph.D., center director, invited Taylor to tour the program after re-establishing their friendship that began almost 10 years ago while they were on the wait staff at a local dinner theater.

The visit is part of Taylor’s fight week activities that will culminate Dec. 9 in a bout at Alltel Arena as the Arkansas boxer defends his title against Kassim Ouma for the undisputed middleweight championship of the world. HBO will present the fight live at 9 p.m. CST.
