Book Notes, Oct. 1

Little Rock native Derek Fisher has released a book. “Character Driven: Life, Lessons, and Basketball” (Touchstone, hardcover, $24.99) blends biography with inspiration. Magic Johnson provides the foreword.

“Main Street Arkansas: The Hearts of Arkansas Cities and Towns — As Portrayed in Postcards in Photographs” by Ray and Steven Hanley ($19.95, paperback; $33.95, hardcover) is the latest from Butler Center books. The collection includes more than 200 images, documenting downtown life everywhere from Bentonville to Lake Village. The Hanleys will sign copies of the books at the Arkansas Studies Institute Galleries on Oct. 9 at an event that will also feature “Main Street in Black and White,” a traveling exhibit of historical photographs.

E. Lynn Harris' final novel, “Mama Dearest” (Karen Hunter Publishing, hardcover, $25.99), was published late last month. Like much of Harris' work it's filled with “sex, secrets and betrayal.”
