RED APPLE INN: In aptly named Eden Isle.
Going to the lake is a summertime tradition in Arkansas. Some people drive their boats to launching points at lakes like Ouachita, and some have homes and condos at lakes like Hamilton.
But since 1963, the crème de la crème of lake getaways in Arkansas has been the Red Apple Inn and Country Club on Greers Ferry Lake. Our readers agree, voting it best resort.
Just outside of Heber Springs, the Red Apple property spreads across 650 acres on an island that offers breathtaking views on all sides.
The main landmark is the inn and restaurant, designed by a student of Frank Lloyd Wright, where you can have breakfast in the dining room overlooking the lake and enjoy some famous recipes, along with drinks, thanks to a private club permit in otherwise dry terrain.
There is a golf course, as well as tennis courts, swimming pools and lake-related sports. The island has become populated with second homes and condos, owned mainly by people from Little Rock and Memphis. Many residents keep boats at the Red Apple marina.
We’ve noticed that Eden Isle dwellers become something akin to Red Apple cultists. Nearly every condo and house is generously decorated with variations on the theme, from paintings to refrigerator magnets in the shape of the favored fruit.
