Best Late Night Hangout

Staying up late

The New Orleans-after-Fat Tuesday, searing-flesh-on-a-hot-plate aroma might deter some, but our readers think Midtown Billiards on South Main is the place to hang out after the other nightclubs have locked up. It could be the 75-cent PBRs on tap, the snooker and pool tables, or the music that can be heard until the wee hours of the morning. It could be merely that the place almost never shuts. Local bands play from 1 a.m-ish until 4 a.m.-ish Friday and Saturdays. A grab bag of patrons makes some strange after-midnight chemistry, a definite factor in the bar's popularity. Service industry personnel make up a big chunk of the regulars, as well as desirables and undesirables from around the city: bikers, college kids, hip-hoppers, the pierced and tattooed, and pool sharks. The person at the next bar stool matching you shot for shot might be a well-known entertainer looking for a party after a gig next door at Juanita's, or maybe a deacon from your church getting some late-night action on the sly. The private club is open 7 a.m. to 5 a.m. seven days a week. (They gotta hose it down sometime.)
