We’re eagerly anticipating the latest mixtape from Goines, the faux-hawk-sporting half of Conduit’s Suga City. “Lead by Example” will feature all of the Conduit family (Goines’ partner in Suga City, Arkansas Bo; DK; and Epiphany) as well as guest spots from local folks like Mr. Morbid, Carteaire Custom and Zbra. Conduit leader Epiphany says it’ll likely drop mid-July.
The golden-voiced kid Chris Denny has a new song featured on the July Paste magazine CD sampler. “Westbound Train” will be featured on the North Little Rock native’s national debut, “Age Old Hunger,” set to come out on 00:02:59 Records on Aug. 7.
Travis McElroy, label head of Thick Syrup Records, is starting work on a new compilation. The follow-up to the “The Arkansas Compilation,” an essential survey of local independent music, the new collection will feature all new local acts. McElroy says he and Dan Johnson, lead singer of the Contingencies, are whittling down a list of some 40 bands they came up with as candidates. They’re shooting for a release in February or March of next year. In other Thick Syrup news, McElroy reports that local barroom heroes Smoke Up Johnny will likely head to the studio in August to begin recording their debut album, which McElroy will release. McElroy also says that San Antokyo, the raucous band led by the Kerby brothers, Josh and Kevin, will soon record its debut, which will likely be released as a joint effort between Max, Last Chance Music and Thick Syrup.
Backyard Enterprises will present “Supa Tight,” the movie, on July 5 at Riverdale 10. Local rapper and Power 92 DJ Ron Mc stars in the hip-hop superhero film, which is part of larger project that includes a soundtrack and comic book.
