There's a new record store in town. Circa ‘76 opened about two weeks ago at 1910 W. Third, next to Warehouse Liquor and the Italian Couple. Owner Joey Lucas says his primary focus is supporting local music, art and culture. Early on, he's only using a fraction of the 4,000 square feet the building offers to house records. A small room off the entry serves as a concert space that Lucas said is available to any local acts. Another room houses a local producer, who's renting from Lucas.
The store's open 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The phone number is 244-9244.
There's a trailer out for “$5 Cover,” the web series from Craig Brewer we've reported on before, on Rock Candy now. The series, which will air on MTV.com, consists of a series of shorts centered on Memphis musicians playing slightly fictionalized versions of themselves. Little Rock native and longtime Memphian Ben Nichols plays “Ben,” described on the show's website as a “sexy, bad-boy front man.” At some point, Ben will have dealings with Clare, who in the show is “the garage-band poster girl,” the “drinking, dancing muse of all the rockers in Memphis.” She plays roller derby, too. Other featured musicians include frequent performers in Little Rock like Amy LaVere, Al Kapone, Cody Dickinson, Jack Oblivian and Harlan T. Bobo. The series debuts in mid-March.
