History beckons: What if Trump was president when . . .

In the past few days I have been wondering what stance the Trump White House might have taken in the days when interracial couples were discriminated against on religious grounds. Or when children were working in the coal mines and factories? Or when civil rights marchers were set upon by angry men with dogs and fire hoses?

Or, God forbid, during the Cuban Missile Crisis?

It’s an easy game, and one I am sure that die-hard Trump supporters might well object to - “He’d make a DEAL!!!!!!!!!” - but, since the present administration seems intent on taking America back into the Dark Ages, these questions become more than just a parlor game.

We’ve all had hearty chuckles at Trump’s alternate universe view of American history, but honestly, what would the world look like if Trump, in a sort of Twilight Zone accident of fate, found himself occupying the Oval Office during any of a number of historical events?

The childlike belief that the man whose knowledge of history wouldn’t fill a thimble aside, isn’t there every chance he might have made matters worse, in each and every instance?

The great labor struggles in our history?

The struggle of women to be taken seriously as full-fledged human beings?

The Communist witch-hunts of the 1950s?

The Little Rock school crisis?

Pick your own key moment in history, and imagine the blustering Trump, with his schoolyard taunts geared to delight those who think “reading” is looking over Facebook memes, and his eloquence - Sad! Horrible! Pathetic! - and his effect on not only American history, but the fate of the world at one given time.

Warning: this is not a game for the faint of heart. Or, when you think about it, maybe not even for the sober.
