Channel 29, Cracker Barrel and the Race for the Cure: How not to cover a news story - Chapter 594

In between searching for stories that are “trending” - not that they will actually tell us much about them, seeking out cute YouTube videos and the eternal quest to include as much Walmart “news” on as possible, it is sometimes easy to miss actual news on Channel 29/KHOG.

This week, Channel 29 managed to put a few more nails in its coffin as a respectable news organization. The first was promoting the new Cracker Barrel restaurant opening, when CB is one of the businesses which buys ad space on their website.

In all of their excitement thinking about that great food -great being a subjective term - they just clear forgot to tell the folks at home about the financial arrangement between CB and Channel 29.

But my least favorite (and it is least favorite, because I still have this childlike belief that TV news is actually committed to bringing us actual news) was an item about the upcoming Race for the Cure, sponsored by the Susan G. Komen folks.

Attendance is down, the frantically smiling anchor told us, and tickets are still available.

In vain did I wait for any explanation of why attendance is down, not only here, but at various Race for the Cure events across the country.

So, even though I doubt that the folks at Channel 29 will send me a check in the mail for doing their job, I’ll tell you why.

In 2012, Komen announced that they would be no longer be funding grants to Planned Parenthood for breast cancer screenings. After the resultant firestorm - which surely, the Komen folks could have predicted - support for the organization began dropping - even after the idiotic decision was rescinded.

Attendance at Races since that time has been dropping, and several cities have severed their ties with the Race itself.

Well, maybe there just wasn’t time for the rest of the story; after all, they had to make room to tell us which news stories were “trending” that day.

And, of course, the third weather forecast, for those in the audience with severe ADD.
