The Men with Bad Haircuts, those who devise sexually humiliating punishments for women seeking abortion in the form of vaginal ultrasound probes, would not be content to stop there, I think, in their attempts to outlaw abortion in this country - to return us to that blessed realm of the pre-Roe V Wade state.
A nation before women began to take control of a little too much power, in their minds.
Aside from the angry men who would actually have women charged with a crime, should they have an abortion, you have the men who are willing to say that, yes, a woman should be legally compelled to carry a child to term, even if the child is the result of rape or incest.
Or even, to be quite frank, if a woman has thought long and hard about it, and has come to the conclusion that, whatever reasons (and we don’t need to be privy to them) she must have an abortion.
Yes, I am aware of the argument that the feelings of the father need to somehow play into account, but in the final analysis, it is the woman’s body, and her decision. To force her to have the baby, either through legal means or through emotional bullying (“You’ll learn to love it; just watch more Lifetime movies”) is to turn a modern American woman into a 21st Century indentured servant, a woman whose body belongs to the State, or her Family, or a Man.
And once becoming that indentured servant, that brood mare for whatever sense of morality has driven her into that state of ownership, how might she view pregnancy in the future? To say nothing of how she might come to feel about those whose unyielding and unforgiving attitudes told her that she must yield to their beliefs?
And, of course, it will be yet another reminder that in the New Order of Things, women don’t have any control over anything at all, really.
