I've been reading a lot of letters in the newspaper lately about immigration, legal and otherwise, and a few familiar strains are starting to come through:
Immigrants should come to this country and adopt our culture, they are to "assimilate" into our culture, as one write put it so eloquently, and forget their old barbaric customs, music, holidays, and fully accept ours.
What a load of nonsense!
On the contrary, like the Borg, our culture tends to look over the new ideas that immigrants bring to our shores (or over the border, as some apoplectic individuals are no doubt spewing at this moment) and pick and choose what we like. Some we like, and adopt for ourselves, some we reject.
We do the same for our older customs, music, fashions, and holidays.
Every healthy culture does this. To do otherwise, to cling to the old ways, simply because they are the old ways, leads us down the Path of Eternal Blandness.
The immigration debate is a worthy topic of debate, but this argument that folks have should leave their culture at home and adopt ours is ignorant at nest, and racist at worst.

Family is just accident . . . they don't mean to get on your nerves. They don't even mean to be your family, they just are. - Marsha Norman
