Surrendering to the Liars and Bullies

There has been a vast, brutal, incoherent rage building in this country since last November.  Those of us lucky (or unlucky, to be more honest) enough to be on many email lists have no doubt received many email “jokes”  which have bordered on the morally  repulsive  oncerning America’s first black president.

But none of that mattered, because Obama represented something new in this country. And for those who wept unashamed tears of joy on Election Night last year, it truly was change they could believe in.

It’s always sort of intriguing to see the letters from Obama-bashers in the newspapers, sneering that, “This is not change we can believe in,” as if they had actually  they voted for him in the first place.

Since then, though many still support the president, a large number are starting to drift away, seeing his White House as a Business as Usual White House. But there is something a little more incredible at play, something more hard to believe.

Since the beginning of the year, with Democrats firmly in control of the White House and Congress, there has been almost a a conscious effort to pretend like they aren’t, or that maybe the election of 2008 really wasn’t a referendum on the grotesquely immoral policies of the past eight years.

Not only is the White House acting like the GOP (the party of the Knights Who Say Nee) have real, actual ideas to bring to the table, but they keep coming back to them after being publicly humiliated. How many shrubberies are you gonna give these these guys, Mr, President?

And the Blue Dog Democrats, Republicans in name only? Why should these gutless ninnies be setting the agenda for the American people?

And now we find our elected officials kowtowing to the Liars and the Bullies on the far right. The irrational shouters, the ones who wave the Constitution and the Bible at public gatherings, and who come with stupid grins on their faces, cradling their well-oiled weapons.

Suddenly they are the media darlings. Where once they would be recognized as lunatics, now they  find an appearance on Fox News, or your local evening news.  They spout nonsense, and we listen attentively.

Members of Congress (with a few brave exceptions) bow before them at town hall meetings.

We are entering into a period of intellectual barbarism.

******

Yeah, and about those “dull and the ignorant” folk at the town meetings

The Desiderata, also known as the Valium Prayer, advises us to:

“ . . .listen to others,  even to the dull and the ignorant, they too have their story.”

No.

Really.

No.

Especially at town meetings.

Yes, I know, the next line goes, “Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.” But you know what? Not every dull and ignorant person is loud. But they are dull and ignorant, and that is a vexation to the spirit, especially the willfully ignorant.

It’s sort of like what Harlan Ellison once said. People have a right to their informed opinion.

Probably anything other than that they should just make their poor families endure.
