The old Zenith slogan sprang to mind as I was in the lobby of the Northwest Arkansas Times last Friday, re-upping my subscription for another six months. There was once a time when the general public could saunter on up to the newsroom and talk to the editors/reporters. Since 9/11, security has gotten tighter all across the country, including at our local paper.
In fact, one even has to show a badge to get upstairs. Or, as the sign the lobby proudly proclaims:
“You must have a employee photo ID or visitor ID . . .”
A Employee badge?
Not an employee badge?
Me write good grammar - can me work at NWA Times?
Mike Masterson’s Classical Gas
When Mike Masterson was editor at the NWA Times back in the 1990s, for a time he had bought into the classical music in the workplace fetish. You know, as in playing classical music will make your employees more productive, more creative, and add a spring to their step?
Back in the days when I actually had friends in the newsroom at the Times, I would go on up to the newsroom. One day the classical music wasn’t playing.
“Where’s Mozart?” I asked.
“Mike’s not here!” a chorus of voices rang out.
