The cover story in this week's Times was the jumping-off point for this blog. It details the problems the state is facing, and will likely face for some time, regarding natural gas drilling operations. The article touches on all the usual concerns plus a few that have escaped media attention. Big land deals will make millionaires out of people who have never made more than $30,000 per year; the water use will only worsen the state's water crisis; disposal of waste has been hard, if not impossible, for the state to regulate; and it seems like the whole system is set up to favor big business over the local landowner.
Make no mistake about it, natural gas exploration will change the landscape of Arkansas, and we'll be left with the mess as gas companies go back home.
