highly saturated color photographs go on exhibit today at Cantrell Gallery in the show "Chasing the Light, From Arkansas to California." You can meet the Little Rock nature photographer at tonight's reception, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
His artist's statement:
“Photography is all about capturing light at just the right moment. Many times this can be done best in the early hours of dawn or waning hours during a sunset. Here the colors produced can be the most vibrant. In my travels I always attempt to consider the time of day that I will be photographing a scene. The morning light offers a constantly growing vibrance that will peak as the sun finally breaks over the horizon. Whereas the evening light offers much more subtle color and saturation as the light fades back over the horizon. Some of the best evening light is what I like to call the magic 30 minutes. This is time after the sun has gone down but is still providing afterglow. It’s this period of time where the sun can back light clouds and sometime paint the sky in shades of orange and red.
For “Chasing the Light, From Arkansas to California”, I have taken some of the images I shot on my recent trip out to California and combined them with some of my favorite scenes from Arkansas. Each state has a unique look, the west offering everything on a majestic grand scale and the Arkansas Mountains and valleys providing beauty on a lesser scale. Many of the scenes in Arkansas I have visited many times over the years, always looking for that special light. The seasonal changes also can make a difference as a foggy fall morning in the Ozarks is one of my favorite subjects. Please take some time to wander through the state by viewing these photographs and see if you agree that each one shares a special place in time where the light was perfect.”
Hours at the gallery, 8208 Cantrell Road, are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, but the gallery will be closed starting at 2 p.m. July 14 through July 16 and will reopen July 17. "Chasing the Light" continues through Sept. 2.
