, which took over the spot previously occupied by Hillcrest Artisan Meats, 2807 Kavanaugh Boulevard, will have its grand opening on June 1. But, you can already swing in for a sandwich between the hours of 11am and 7pm.
The tightly curated menu is written on butcher paper, still on the roll, hanging on the wall. The counter at which orders are taken displays beautiful cuts of meat just begging to be taken home for dinner. Across from the ordering counter is a lovely set of shelves holding honey, T-shirts, chocolate, and handmade mugs and saucers.
I've been looking forward to trying the new spot for weeks, and the quick lunch I needed to grab on this particular day offered the perfect opportunity. The space has a warm yet slightly industrial aesthetic. Larger than it appears, with a few built-in tables in front and several more through the back, it offers a casual vibe for a quick lunch.
And quick it was. There was a respectable crowd despite the nearly 2 o'clock hour, yet our order numbers were called in around 5 minutes. I selected a Salmon Salad Sandwich
, with pickled mustard seeds, tomatoes, egg, lettuce, and olives. I was imagining a variation on tuna salad, but instead I got two huge pita halves with chunks of salmon distributed among the other ingredients—and it was fantastic. Cool, crisp, with distinct yet well-blended flavors from the Dijon aioli and mustard seeds, this was an ideal end to a hot day of outdoor interviews.
My friend ordered a Roasted Cauliflower Sandwich
, which comes with chopped, roasted cauliflower on ciabatta with mozzarella. Now, I understand that if you're not looking at the sandwich, sneaking pieces of cauliflower off the plate, that might sound underwhelming, but let me be clear: this sandwich is amazing. It was warm, the cauliflower was perfectly cooked, and something in the seasoning made it almost reminiscent of a pulled pork BBQ sandwich.
I'd say District Fare is already a winner. They've got several options, all of which seem to have been designed with expediency in mind. And, despite that location's reputation for quality meat, they now also have mean-good vegetarian options. I'll be back, next time for a beer
and a Cuban
