The mirror as a symbol for personal reflection and thinking is the subject of "Speculum-Speculari," an exhibition of works in egg tempera, silverpoint, ink and graphite by Marianela de la Hoz of San Diego opening Saturday, Oct. 10, in the Fine Arts Center of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. In addition to the paintings and drawings, the exhibition includes mirrors with painted phrases that refer to reflection.

From the UALR press release:

Looking at paintings and looking at mirrors, viewers are invited to participate with created and reflected surfaces. Using actual mirrors, the artist gives movement to the show and creates a dynamic participatory experience.

Dr. Amy Galpin, the curator of the exhibition, organized by the Cornell Fine Arts Museum at Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla., was inspired by Arthur Bowen Davies' "Dweller on the Threshhold," which features a wispy nude looking at her own image, in putting together "Speculum-Speculari," a  press release from UALR informs us.

De la Hoz willl give a talk at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, after a reception in the gallery that starts at 4 p.m. The show runs through Dec. 8.
