Alex Gilliam, the founder of Philadelphia's Public Workshop, which gets youth involved in design of public spaces, will give a talk at 6 p.m. tonight (Tuesday) at the Arkansas Arts Center. Gilliam, named by Philadelphia magazine as one of the city's Smartest People, calls himself the "cheerleader of possibility." In Technically Philly, Gilliam was quoted:

"We spend all this time creating all these mechanisms for trying to control teenagers, and the reality is the most fundamental condition of teenagers is to actually want to have some aspect of control of the world around them. So, if you actually let them have an impact on the design of their decrepit school, actually let them fix something, that’s huge! It’s like half the battle."

Gilliam, who earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in architecture, guides students from design to construction. You can see examples of the students' projects at the Public Workshop website.

There will a reception before the free talk, which opens the 12th season of the Architecture and Design Network's lecture series.
