As we use any means necessary to escape summer’s most intense blasts of oven-like extremes, a cooling libation is a logical choice. It’s time for a good, old fashioned Southern cocktail. Coincidentally, Colonial Wines & Spirits is presenting their Southern Summer Cocktail Series—a month-long cycle of four tried-and-true mixed drink recipes with roots that go deep in southern soil. Have these drinks at the ready and you’ll fend off any heat wave!

Southern Bliss
(at the Tasting Bar on August 6th)

*2 oz Don Q White Rum
*1 oz Orange Curacao
*1 tsp simple syrup

DIRECTIONS:
Shake or strain on ice, add cherry and serve.

Scarlet Bliss
(at the Tasting Bar on August 13th)

*1.5oz Rittenhouse Rye
*Dash grenadine
*Dash lemon juice
*Cherry bitters

DIRECTIONS: Combine ingredients over ice in a shaker; shake vigorously. Strain and serve up in a Manhattan glass. Garnish with lemon zest.

The Daisy Sangria
(at the Tasting Bar on August 20th)

*1 bottle Claret (Coppola)
*4 oz DeKuyper triple sec
*8oz St. Remy brandy
*Juice of 2 limes

DIRECTIONS: This is a “punch style” recipe. Combine claret, triple sec, brandy and lime juice in a large punch bowl. Slice whole lemon and float lemon wheels on top. Serve equal parts sangria and club soda on ice.

Mint Julep
(at the Tasting Bar on August 27th)

*2oz Belle Mead Bourbon
*1oz DeKuyper mint
*Dash of Fees Black Walnut Bitters
*2 sprigs fresh mint

DIRECTIONS: Muddle leaves from mint sprig at bottom of rocks glass. Add ice, bourbon, bitters, simple syrup and top of with soda water. Garnish with mint leaf.
