Sometimes, I get the best phone calls. Case in point: The Root Cafe’s Jack Sundell called me up the other day and asked if I’d be interested in judging a pie contest, which is sort of like asking questions about bears and their woodland activities. And with a line-up of fellow judges that includes heavy-hitters like Simon Majumdar of Food Network fame and Arkansas pie expert (who literally wrote the book on Arkansas Pie) Kat Robinson, it looks like I’ll be in some good company when it comes time to get my pie on.

Here’s the thing, though: We can’t eat pie if you don’t bake pie. Jack wants to emphasize the traditional baking aspect of this contest, meaning that all amateurs are not only welcome—they’ll be the stars here. We aren’t looking for restaurant pies, we’re looking for the sort of pie you drive back to your hometown to eat whenever your mama makes one. Bring that pie. Hell, bring your mama, too.
