As we reported back in December, the estate of Johnny Cash
plans to release "Out Among the Stars"
on March 24, a "lost" Cash album
that was cut by Cash and producer Billy Sherril in the early 1980s. Feeling Cash's classic sound was too old hat in the all-hat-no-cattle heyday of Urban Cowboy, however, his record label shelved the album and it was never released. The master tapes turned up in his vast memorabilia vaults in 2013, however, and the album was rushed into production.
The Guardian UK reports
that the album includes a host of never-heard gems, including a duet between Cash and wife June Carter Cash, and another with Waylon Jennings.
While you're waiting for March your money in your hand, however, check out a teaser single off the album: "She Used to Love Me A Lot."
It's classic Cash — a haunting, beautiful story/song about lost love and regret, sung by a master at the height of his vocal power. Definitely a promise of great things to come.
