On Oct. 7, 2011, Alice Walton was pulled over by a Texas state trooper on Interstate 20 for speeding and was subsequently charged with drunk driving. She'd been celebrating her birthday with friends in Fort Smith  Worth and was returning to her home in Millsap. She refused to provide a breath sample.

Walton lawyer Dee J. Kelly said at the time — just a month before the opening of Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville — that Walton "accepts full responsibility for this unfortunate incident and deeply regrets it.”

Two years later, the Parker County attorney has decided to drop the case because, he said, the trooper who arrested Walton has been suspended and can't be called to testify. The Weatherford Democrat has the story.

Now, Kelly says this, according to the paper: “Ms. Walton is pleased that the matter has been completely and correctly resolved without charges being filed.” Correctly resolved? Is there some evidence the charge in the "unfortunate incident" for which Walton previously took "full responsibility" was incorrect? Story doesn't say so.

On the face of it, it sounds like Parker County doesn't want to disoblige the 16th richest woman in the world.
