The Mid-America Arts Alliance has selected Arkadelphia for its Community Mural Project, which we wrote about earlier here.

Arkadelphia booster V.L. Cox sends us a heads up on the news from the mural project's blogspot, which will follow the progress of the mural in Arkadelphia. Jordan Karpe, a Little Rock artist, will apprentice with muralist and writer Dave Loewenstein of Lawrence, Kan., later this summer. Loewenstein, who teaches "Roots and Practice: Community Based Public Art" at Washburn University in Topeka, has done murals in Missouri, Arizona, Mississippi, Iowa, Illinois, Oklahoma, New Orleans, New York City and in Northern Ireland and has stencil prints in the New York Public Library and the Center for the Study of Political Graphics in Los Angeles.

Karpe, a recent graduate of the University of Central Arkansas, designed, organized, and implemented the creation of a mural inside the Jefferson D. Farris dormitory for his honors program thesis. Mural assistant will be Ashley Laird, a professional muralist, whose most recent work, “Reanimating the Arts in Topeka,” can be seen at the Great Wall of Topeka.

Arkadelphia was up against Russellville, Conway, Hot Springs and Fort Smith for the Mid-America project.
