  • Pettaway Pocket Park, a University of Arkansas Community Design Center project, is just example of interest in revitalizing the neighborhood.

The Pettaway neighborhood, south of Interstate 630 and east of Main Street, is seeing a revival of sorts with the addition of the city's first container homes, several University of Arkansas-designed modern dwellings and homes rehabilitated by the Downtown Little Rock CDC for first-time buyers. Now, the neighborhood has won a $1,000 Love Your Block Challenge Grant to hire an artist to design a community-inspired mural on the wall of the I-30 overpass at East 17th Street, near Rockefeller Elementary.

The mural will incorporate ceramics designed by children in the neighborhood. A competition to select the muralist will be city-wide.

Sharon Boyd-Struthers, artist and teacher at Rockefeller, is advisor for the project. I'll publish more on contest details when I get them.

The Love Your Block challenge grants are funded with a donation of $10,000 from Home Depot, $6,000 from State Reps. John Walker and John Edwards and $19,000 from the city. Thirty-five $1,000 grants will be awarded.
